Questions carriers ask us
About Zippy ELD and the ELD mandate. If yours isn't here, call and ask a person.
Call +1 (216) 480-6677What is an ELD and how does it work?
An electronic logging device (ELD) connects to a commercial vehicle's engine to record driving time, engine hours, vehicle miles and location automatically. Zippy ELD pairs that device with our driver app over Bluetooth, so Hours of Service (HOS) are logged accurately without paper logbooks.
Which duty statuses can drivers select?
Drivers can choose from the four standard duty statuses:
- Off Duty
- Sleeper Berth
- Driving (recorded automatically when the vehicle is in motion)
- On Duty, Not Driving
Special driving categories such as Personal Conveyance and Yard Moves are also supported when the carrier enables them.
Can I use my own smartphone or tablet?
Yes. The Zippy ELD driver app works on most modern Android and iOS phones and tablets. Pair your device with the ELD hardware plugged into the truck's diagnostic port and you're ready.
What happens during a roadside inspection?
Drivers open inspection mode to show logs on screen, or transfer their records to the officer using the FMCSA-approved telematic methods (web service or email). Supporting documents and DVIRs are in the same place.
Who is required to use an ELD?
The FMCSA ELD rule applies to most motor carriers and drivers who are required to keep Records of Duty Status. Full compliance has been mandatory since December 16, 2019. Some exceptions exist, for example certain short-haul drivers and vehicles manufactured before model year 2000. Call us if you're not sure whether your fleet qualifies.
How long does it take to get started?
Most fleets are running within a day. Our team helps you set up your company account, add drivers and trucks, and install the devices, which takes only a few minutes per truck.
